GISRUK in DurhamWe are pleased to invite you to attend the 17th annual GIS Research UK (GISRUK) conference to be held in the welcoming city of Durham, North East England from Wednesday 1 April 2009 to Friday 3 April 2009. We are confident that we can provide an intellectually challenging and socially stimulating event showcasing the best in advanced contemporary GIS research. The Call for Papers is open and you are encouraged to submit material relating to your current research in the fields of geographic information science and all associated disciplines. Traditionally, GISRUK has provided a platform both for early career researchers and those with a significant record of achievement in the area. As such, the conference provides a welcome blend of innovative thinking and mature reflection. GISRUK is the premier academic GIS conference in the UK and we are keen to maintain its outstanding record of achievement in developing GIS in the UK and beyond. The Call for Papers indicates the deadline of Friday 12 December 2008: if you are an established GIS researcher, in academia or industry, you are strongly encouraged to present your latest work; if you supervise research by PhD students or research associates please persuade them to contribute; if you are a postgraduate in the field of GIS you are most welcome to present at GISRUK. Registration is now open: please follow this link or click above. There are separate rates for professionals, academics and for registered students. Accommodation is booked in Grey and Collingwood Colleges, on the Science Campus of Durham University; it is also possible to register as a day visitor. Social events will make use of the ancient Castle in Durham and a boat cruise from the modern Quayside in NewcastleGateshead. The Young Researchers Forum (YRF) will be run as usual before the main GISRUK conference, on the afternoon of Tuesday 31 March 2009 and the morning of Wednesday 1 April 2009. This valuable training opportunity is designed to raise awareness and confidence amongst research students in GIS, addressing a range of issues of importance related to embarking upon, progressing with and successfully completing a research project. The YRF will be led by Dr Peter Halls of York University, assisted by our plenary speakers, Professor Kirsi Virrantaus, Helsinki University of Technology (Finland) and Professor Robert Weibel, University of Zurich (Switzerland). Again, as is traditional, there will also be special workshop events prior to GISRUK2009. Professor Chris Brunsdon (University of Leicester) will run a spatial analysis workshop looking at spatial discontinuity and other advanced topics, whilst a team from the University of Nottingham will give participants the chance to experience ‘Second Life’ within a geovisualisation context. Please bookmark this website and visit again as it is updated throughout the coming months. Included in the programme is the Conference Dinner in the Great Hall of Durham Castle and an evening cruise on the River Tyne. We are grateful to our sponsors:
