research degrees • PhD and MPhil

- Do you have a first degree in science or engineering?
- Do you want to build on your existing skills and knowledge, or perhaps
retrain as a specialist in a new discipline?
- Are you interested in pushing forward human understanding through
original research, and in working with some of the worlds
leading researchers?
- Do you want a career as an Earth or environmental scientist, or as an
engineer?
- If yes, then a postgraduate advanced course or research programme
in the School of Civil Engineering and Geosciences at Newcastle could
help you realise your aims.
- We can offer you a choice of 18 MSc and MRes advanced courses
(12 months full-time, 24-36 months part-time) spanning civil engineering
and the geosciences. Our courses are taught by leading academics
and make full use of our recently refurbished postgraduate training
suites. Most of our courses are funded by EPSRC and/or industry,
and UK students with good first degrees can usually expect to receive
at least partial funding for their studies.
- We are also looking for well qualified applicants, with an enthusiasm
for research, to take up NERC/EPSRC and industrially funded studentships
for PhD (normally three years) and MPhil (normally two years) degrees
in our multi-disciplinary research groups. Research topics range
from archaeological chemistry through to water resource engineering.
Many of our research programmes involve an initial three-month
period of intensive theoretical and practical tuition and all are
designed to offer a fast, efficient, and well managed route to
a higher degree.
- Whether you are interested in a taught postgraduate course, or
a research degree, you will benefit from access to the Schools
enthusiastic, knowledgeable and friendly staff, its extensive research
and teaching facilities, and its research-led learning environment.
