transport @ newcastle
The Transport Operations Research Group (TORG) was set up as one of the Centres of Excellence by the (then) Science Research Council and celebrated 35 years of achievement in 2007. TORG is at the forefront of research in the delivery and implementation of smart technologies for monitoring traffic and travel along with related impacts in order to deliver more effective solutions. TORG prides itself in an integrated approach, researching the science as well as the behavioural aspects to better inform transport management decisions and influence sustainable policies that will make a real difference to the community.
TORG is employing advanced technologies and behavioural research to address the need for radical changes in transport provision, traffic network management and public behaviour. The group focuses on research issues raised by the Foresight Intelligent Infrastructure study, the Stern Report and the Eddington Review. TORG is recognised internationally as a truly interdisciplinary research group currently engaged with high profile, high impact projects, funded by EPSRC, DTI, DfT and the EU in collaboration with the UK and overseas universities with strong working relationships with industry, local authorities and consultants. Within the School TORG represents the focal point in a constellation of research activity that currently funds researchers in several other Schools and Institutes across Newcastle University.
In order to effectively manage our expanding range of activities, projects are associated with two main themes, namely:
Stakeholder engagement with fundamental research has resulted in high impact knowledge transfer. This embraces all aspects of our research portfolio and ranges from proof of concept of hardware and software through delivery of scenarios, expert advice and influencing policies.
Transport @ Newcastle works with a wide variety of industrial partners to help deliver our degree programmes. Building these relationships helps to ensure that our degrees are exciting, up-to-date, relevant to industry and professionally accredited.
